Agreements of Artemis

Current Affairs for CLAT

During a diplomatic visit to the United States, India’s Prime Minister announced the country’s intention to join the Artemis Accords, marking a significant step forward in space cooperation.

This decision lays the groundwork for a deep partnership between NASA and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

The collaborative efforts will culminate in the training of Indian astronauts at Houston’s famed Johnson Space Centre, with the ultimate goal of deploying these trained spacefarers to the International Space Station (ISS) in 2024.

Marking a Remarkable Milestone

India is now the 27th country to sign up to the Artemis Accords, a project coordinated by the US Department of State and NASA. Australia, Canada, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, the United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom were among the eight founding members of this international consortium.

Evolving Principles of Space Exploration

The Artemis Accords, at their heart, reflect a progression of space exploration concepts, drawing influence from the 1967 Outer Space Treaty. This crucial pact, which functions under the supervision of the United Nations, is the bedrock of international space law.

NASA and the Artemis Programme Pushing the Boundaries

NASA, a recognised independent agency of the United States, is tasked with leading the nation’s civilian space endeavours, aeronautics developments, and cutting-edge space research.

It took up the mantle from the NACA  in 1958, ushering in a new age of space research.

NASA’s Artemis Accord is a monumental project that includes a number of innovative missions and programmes that are set to alter our exploration of the universe.

The first stage in this momentous journey was the spectacular launch of the spacecraft “Orion” atop the Space Launch System  from the famous Kennedy Space Centre on November 16, 2022.

Unfurling Lunar Aspirations

The Artemis-III story, set for release in 2025, adds to the crescendo of human discovery. A significant chapter will unfold when astronauts travel beyond Artemis-II’s lunar flyby route.

With a lunar landing as its major element, this mission will allow mankind to step foot on the moon’s surface once more. This audacious move is accompanied by a pledge to dive deeper into lunar studies, uncovering the secrets that have captivated human imagination for decades.

Furthermore, the Artemis program’s ambitious timeline includes the creation of a Lunar Gateway station by 2029.

India’s Cosmic Partnership

The Artemis-III tale, which is expected to be released in 2025, contributes to the crescendo of human knowledge. When humans venture beyond Artemis-II’s lunar flyby path, an important chapter will be written.

Pioneering Lunar Exploration

The Chandrayaan-3 mission, key to India’s moon ambitions, is a follow-up to the July 2019 Chandrayaan-2 mission.

Whereas Chandrayaan-2 intended to install a rover on the lunar South Pole, the Vikram lander’s failed landing attempt presented unexpected obstacles.

As a robust reaction, India launches Chandrayaan-3 to confirm the complicated landing methods critical for the future Lunar Polar Exploration Mission, a joint venture with Japan scheduled for 2024.

Navigating Legal and Ethical Frontiers

Chandrayaan-2, a tripartite ensemble consisting of the Orbiter, Lander (Vikram), and Rover (Pragyaan), was created to investigate lunar mysteries using a variety of scientific equipment.

The Lander and Rover sought for a soft lunar landing as the Orbiter studied the moon from a 100-kilometre orbit. The names “Vikram” and “Pragyaan” given to these modules honoured Vikram Sarabhai, the visionary behind India’s space programme.

The Moon Agreement of 1979 emerges as a guiding compass in the context of the Artemis program’s ambition for permanent lunar communities.

Forging a Cosmic Future

The legal repercussions of the Artemis Accords loom big in the middle of the promise for revolutionary collaboration and cosmic expansion. The provision allowing unrestricted resource exploitation on the moon and other celestial worlds raises serious issues.

Summary

India’s involvement in the Artemis Accords is a significant step forward in global space cooperation. India contributes to the progress of human presence in space by teaming forces with NASA and adopting the concepts of peaceful exploration and shared resources.
