Already Graduated? You Can Still Give CLAT, But There’s a Catch

If you have already completed graduation or are planning your career beyond Class 12, you may wonder, “Can I give CLAT after graduation?” The simple answer is yes, you can appear for CLAT UG even after completing graduation, provided you meet the Class 12 eligibility requirements. There is currently no upper age limit for CLAT UG 2027.
However, being eligible to take CLAT does not automatically mean that CLAT is the best option after graduation. CLAT UG is primarily used for admission to undergraduate integrated law programmes such as BA LL.B., BBA LL.B. and similar courses offered by participating National Law Universities. If you have already completed a bachelor’s degree, you may also have the option of pursuing a three-year LL.B. from universities that offer it.
That is why it is important to understand the difference between CLAT after graduation, CLAT UG, CLAT PG and three-year LL.B. admission before deciding your next step.
Can You Give CLAT After Graduation?
Yes, you can give CLAT after graduation.
The official CLAT 2027 UG eligibility criteria focus mainly on your Class 12 qualification. According to the Consortium of National Law Universities, there is no upper age limit for appearing in CLAT UG 2027. Candidates must have passed Class 12 or an equivalent examination with the required minimum marks.
This means that completing a BA, BCom, BSc, BBA or another undergraduate degree does not stop you from appearing for CLAT UG.

Explore CLATBuddy →For CLAT UG 2027, the minimum marks required in Class 12 are:
- 45% marks or equivalent grade for candidates in the general eligibility category.
- 40% marks or equivalent grade for candidates belonging to SC, ST or PwD categories.
Therefore, if you completed your graduation a few years after Class 12 and now want to study law, your graduation itself does not make you ineligible for CLAT UG.
What Course Can You Get Through CLAT After Graduation?
This is where many students become confused.
If you appear for CLAT UG after graduation, you are applying for undergraduate law programmes offered through CLAT. These are generally five-year integrated law courses.
Depending on the NLU, programmes may include combinations such as:
- BA LL.B.
- BBA LL.B.
- BCom LL.B.
- BSc LL.B.
- Other integrated undergraduate law programmes
So, suppose you complete a three-year BA degree and then clear CLAT UG. You should not assume that your earlier graduation will reduce the duration of the integrated law programme.
You would normally join the undergraduate programme according to the admission rules of the concerned NLU.
This is an important point because many students searching for CLAT after graduation are actually looking for admission to a three-year LL.B.
CLAT UG and three-year LL.B. admissions are not the same thing.
Should You Give CLAT UG After Graduation?
You can, but whether you should depends on what you want from your legal education.
If your dream is specifically to study at an NLU through its CLAT-based undergraduate programme, appearing for CLAT UG may still make sense.
However, if your main goal is simply to obtain an LL.B. degree after completing graduation, you should compare CLAT UG with three-year LL.B. programmes before making a decision.
For example, imagine that you finish a three-year bachelor’s degree at around 21 years of age.
If you then join a five-year integrated law programme, your total undergraduate education may extend considerably. A three-year LL.B., where available and suitable, may provide a shorter route into legal education after graduation.
Neither choice is automatically right or wrong. Your decision should depend on factors such as:
- The university you want to study at
- The duration of the course
- Your career goals
- The quality of placements and internships
- Course fees
- Location
- Academic opportunities
- Your willingness to spend additional years completing another undergraduate programme
For a student making this decision, the name of the entrance exam should not be the only consideration. The course and university matter much more.
Can You Take CLAT for a 3-Year LL.B. After Graduation?
Generally, CLAT UG should not be treated as the standard entrance examination for three-year LL.B. courses.
CLAT UG is conducted for admission to undergraduate programmes offered by participating NLUs. The official CLAT eligibility criteria identify Class 12 as the qualifying examination for the UG programme.
Three-year LL.B. programmes are designed specifically for graduates. Their admission process depends on the university offering the programme.
Different universities may conduct their own entrance examinations or use another admission mechanism.
Therefore, if your goal after graduation is a three-year LL.B., do not automatically start preparing for CLAT without checking the admission process of the universities you want to target.
First shortlist your preferred law colleges. Then check:
- Whether they offer a three-year LL.B.
- What entrance examination they accept.
- What graduation marks are required.
- Whether there are category-specific eligibility rules.
- What their admission timeline is.
This approach can save you from preparing for the wrong entrance examination.
What Is the Difference Between CLAT UG and CLAT PG?
The names CLAT UG and CLAT PG can be confusing, particularly when you hear the words “after graduation.”
The easiest way to understand the difference is to look at the qualification required.
CLAT UG
CLAT UG is meant for admission to undergraduate law programmes.
For CLAT UG 2027, the qualifying examination is Class 12 or an equivalent examination. There is no upper age limit under the Consortium’s eligibility criteria.
So, even if you have completed a non-law graduation degree, you may still be eligible for CLAT UG.
CLAT PG
CLAT PG is different.
It is primarily meant for candidates who already have an LL.B. degree or equivalent law qualification and want admission to postgraduate law programmes such as LL.M.
For CLAT PG 2027, candidates must have an LL.B. degree or equivalent examination with at least 50% marks, while SC, ST and PwD candidates require at least 45% marks. There is no upper age limit.
So, simply having a BA, BCom, BBA or BSc degree does not make you eligible for CLAT PG.
You need a law degree.
Can You Give CLAT PG After Any Graduation?
No.
This is one of the most important distinctions to remember.
Suppose you have completed:
BA + no LL.B.
You cannot simply appear for CLAT PG because you are a graduate.
Similarly:
BCom + no LL.B.
A BCom degree alone does not satisfy the CLAT PG qualification requirement.
CLAT PG requires an LL.B. or equivalent law degree.
So, when someone says that CLAT can be taken “after graduation,” always check whether they are talking about CLAT UG or CLAT PG.
Your eligibility depends on the programme you want to enter.
Is There an Age Limit for CLAT After Graduation?
For CLAT UG 2027, the Consortium states that there is no upper age limit for candidates appearing for the undergraduate programme.
This is particularly useful for students who discover an interest in law after beginning or completing another degree.
For example, you may have studied commerce, humanities or science and later decided that law is a better career option for you. Your age alone does not prevent you from appearing for CLAT UG under the current Consortium eligibility rule.
CLAT PG 2027 also has no upper age limit.
However, admission rules of individual universities and programmes should always be checked carefully because programme-specific requirements can differ.
What Is the CLAT Exam Pattern If You Apply After Graduation?
Your graduation does not give you a different CLAT UG paper.
You take the same CLAT UG examination as other eligible candidates.
For CLAT 2027, the UG examination has 120 multiple-choice questions, carries a maximum of 120 marks and has a duration of two hours. There is a negative marking of 0.25 marks for every incorrect answer.
The paper covers five broad areas:
- English Language
- Current Affairs including General Knowledge
- Legal Reasoning
- Logical Reasoning
- Quantitative Techniques
The Consortium describes CLAT UG as a test primarily focused on comprehension and reasoning abilities rather than previous knowledge of law.
That means having a graduation degree does not necessarily give you a major advantage. Your CLAT preparation still needs to focus on reading speed, comprehension, reasoning, current affairs, accuracy and time management.
Is CLAT Difficult to Prepare for After Graduation?
CLAT preparation after graduation is completely possible, but you need to understand the nature of the exam.
You may have developed stronger reading and analytical skills during college, which can help with passage-based questions. At the same time, areas such as quantitative techniques may require revision if you have not studied school-level mathematics for several years.
A practical preparation strategy would include regular reading, solving passage-based questions, revising current affairs and taking timed mock tests.
You should especially work on:
- Reading comprehension and vocabulary
- Current affairs and important national and international developments
- Legal reasoning passages
- Logical reasoning
- Basic quantitative concepts
- Mock tests and detailed analysis
Since CLAT contains negative marking, accuracy matters along with speed. For CLAT 2027, each incorrect answer results in a deduction of 0.25 marks.
Should You Choose a 3-Year LL.B. or CLAT After Graduation?
If you are already a graduate, this is probably the most important question.
Do not choose CLAT only because it is one of the most famous law entrance examinations in India.
Instead, compare your actual options.
A three-year LL.B. may make sense if you already hold a bachelor’s degree and want a direct graduate-entry route into law.
CLAT UG may make sense if you specifically want an undergraduate programme offered through participating NLUs and are comfortable with the programme duration and structure.
Before deciding, ask yourself:
- Which law colleges do I genuinely want to attend?
- Do those colleges offer three-year or five-year law programmes?
- How much additional time am I willing to invest?
- What are the fees?
- What internships and career opportunities are available?
- Which entrance examinations do those universities accept?
- What type of legal career am I considering?
At 16 to 18 years of age, this distinction is also useful even if graduation is still several years away. Understanding the pathways now can help you avoid assuming that CLAT is the only route into law.
Can You Become a Lawyer If You Start Law After Graduation?
Yes.
Starting legal education after completing another graduation degree does not automatically stop you from building a legal career.
Students come to law from different academic backgrounds. Someone may discover an interest in litigation after studying political science, another may move towards corporate law after commerce, while someone with a science background may later become interested in intellectual property or technology law.
What matters is choosing a recognised legal education pathway that fits your circumstances and professional plans.
If you are currently in Class 11 or 12 and already know that you want to study law, preparing for CLAT UG directly after Class 12 may usually be a more straightforward path to a five-year integrated law programme.
If you discover law later, graduation does not necessarily close the door.
What Should You Remember About Giving CLAT After Graduation?
Yes, you can give CLAT after graduation, but you should first identify which CLAT examination and which law course match your qualifications.
If you have completed a regular bachelor’s degree such as BA, BCom, BSc or BBA, you may still appear for CLAT UG if you satisfy its Class 12 eligibility requirements. CLAT UG 2027 currently has no upper age limit.
However, CLAT UG generally takes you towards undergraduate integrated law programmes. If you are looking for a graduate-entry law course, you should separately explore three-year LL.B. programmes and their respective admission tests.
If you already have an LL.B. and want to pursue an LL.M., CLAT PG is the relevant examination, subject to its eligibility requirements.
The most important lesson is simple: do not choose the exam first and the course later. Decide what type of law degree you want, shortlist suitable colleges and then prepare for the entrance examination required for those colleges.
