BREAKING | Supreme Court Stays Delhi HC’s Order to Revise CLAT-UG 2025 Merit List

The Supreme Court has issued an interim stay on the Delhi High Court’s directive instructing the Consortium of National Law Universities to revise the merit list of CLAT-UG 2025 due to alleged errors in certain exam questions.

A bench led by Justices BR Gavai and AG Masih granted the stay while issuing notice in response to a Special Leave Petition challenging the High Court’s ruling, which was delivered by a division bench on 23 April 2025.

Earlier, the Delhi High Court identified mistakes in four questions from sets B, C, and D of the exam paper and ordered that appropriate marks be awarded to affected candidates. It instructed the Consortium to update the merit list within four weeks. However, the court did not extend this relief to candidates who received Set A, stating that no discrepancies were found in that version.

The petition before the Supreme Court was filed by a candidate who had attempted Set A and secured the 22nd All India Rank. She argued that the High Court’s order unfairly advantaged candidates who had attempted the other sets, thereby depriving her of a fair and equal opportunity.

The CLAT-UG 2025 exam, conducted on 1 December 2024, had sparked widespread criticism over question-related errors. In response, a single-judge bench of the Delhi High Court had earlier found inaccuracies in two answers and directed the Consortium to update the results for the petitioners. The Consortium appealed this decision, leading to the division bench’s April 23 verdict.

Back in February, the Supreme Court had transferred multiple petitions—originally filed in different High Courts—concerning the CLAT 2025 results to the Delhi High Court for consolidated consideration.
