CLAT 2025 Counselling Postponed as Consortium of NLUs Heads to Supreme Court

The Consortium of National Law Universities (NLUs) has postponed the CLAT 2025 counselling process, citing legal proceedings over the revision of the merit list. The decision comes after the Delhi High Court directed the consortium to amend the merit list due to errors in the final answer key.

In an official notice, the Consortium announced its intent to approach the Supreme Court for relief against the High Court’s ruling, which had earlier identified discrepancies in the answers to two questions in the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) 2025.

Reason for the Postponement

The CLAT 2025 examination was held on December 1 for undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) admissions, with the final answer key released on December 7. Following the release, several candidates raised objections to the answer key and criticised the high fee of ₹1,000 per question for filing objections.

The Delhi High Court, responding to a writ petition by an aspirant, reviewed the merit list published on December 7 and directed the Consortium to revise it. A single-judge bench ruled on December 20 that the answer key contained errors for two questions, necessitating updates to the merit list.

The Consortium’s appeal to overturn this decision was dismissed by a division bench of the High Court, leaving it with no option but to seek relief from the Supreme Court.

Impact on Counselling

As per the original schedule, the first merit list for admissions was slated for release on December 26, 2024. However, due to the ongoing legal hurdles, the release of the list and the counselling process have been delayed.

In its notice, the Consortium stated:

“We are approaching the Supreme Court for appropriate relief against this order at the earliest available date due to the ongoing court vacation.”

The notice assured candidates that a revised counselling schedule would be announced once the Supreme Court appeal is resolved.

What Happens Next?

The legal process has introduced uncertainty for CLAT 2025 candidates awaiting admission to prestigious law universities. The Consortium’s Supreme Court appeal will likely determine how quickly the revised merit list can be finalised and the counselling process resumed.

Candidates are advised to monitor official updates on the Consortium’s website, consortiumofnlus.ac.in, for further developments.
