CLAT Rank 4000: Is It Good Enough for an NLU?

If you have secured around 4000 rank in CLAT, the first question that probably comes to your mind is, “Is 4000 a good rank in CLAT?” The answer depends on your category, domicile, preferred National Law University and the counselling round.

For a General category student, a CLAT rank of 4000 is usually not considered a strong rank for admission to an NLU through the regular counselling process. Most General category seats at participating NLUs close at much better ranks. However, this does not mean that your law admission journey is over. If you have a reservation, state domicile advantage or access to another applicable category, your possibilities can be significantly different. Vacancy rounds and good non-NLU law colleges can also give you worthwhile options.

So, instead of judging your result only by the number 4000, you should understand what that rank actually means and what choices are available to you.

Is 4000 a Good Rank in CLAT?

A 4000 rank in CLAT can be called an average or moderate rank, but it is generally not a good rank if your only goal is getting an NLU seat under the General category.

Recent CLAT cut-offs make this fairly clear. In CLAT 2026, several NLUs closed their General category seats within roughly the top 1,000 to 2,000 ranks during the regular counselling rounds. For example, third-round General category closing ranks included around 1,348 for GNLU Silvassa, 1,172 for CNLU Patna BA LLB and 1,154 for NUALS Kochi.

That means an All India Rank of 4000 would usually place a General category student outside the normal admission range of most NLUs.

But your category can completely change the picture. The same CLAT 2026 data shows SC, ST, OBC, EWS and certain state-category closing ranks extending much further. Therefore, whether 4000 is a good CLAT rank cannot be answered properly without considering your reservation and domicile status.

Can You Get an NLU With 4000 Rank in CLAT?

If you belong to the General category without any applicable reservation, getting an NLU at AIR 4000 through standard CLAT counselling is difficult.

This is because NLU seats are limited and competition is high. Many students placed within the first few thousand ranks compete for these seats, and General category cut-offs at most NLUs close much earlier.

For example, CLAT 2026 Round 1 General category closing ranks included:

  • NLSIU Bengaluru at around AIR 101
  • NALSAR Hyderabad at around AIR 148
  • NLIU Bhopal BA LLB at around AIR 432
  • HNLU Raipur at around AIR 736
  • GNLU Gandhinagar at around AIR 376
  • RGNUL Punjab at around AIR 1,059
  • CNLU Patna BA LLB at around AIR 1,141
  • GNLU Silvassa at around AIR 1,259

These figures show the level of competition for General category NLU seats.

However, do not treat previous or current cut-offs as fixed rules. Closing ranks can change every year depending on the paper difficulty, number of candidates, seat matrix, reservations and student preferences.

Can Reserved Category Students Get an NLU With 4000 Rank?

This is where AIR 4000 can become much more promising.

If you belong to an SC, ST, OBC, EWS or another eligible reservation category, you should check category-specific cut-offs rather than comparing your rank only with General category closing ranks.

For instance, in CLAT 2026 Round 1, SC closing ranks included approximately:

  • NLSIU Bengaluru: 3,072
  • NALSAR Hyderabad: 3,259
  • WBNUJS Kolkata BA LLB: 3,833
  • NLU Jodhpur BA LLB: 4,042
  • NLIU Bhopal BA LLB: 5,407
  • GNLU Gandhinagar: 5,340
  • HNLU Raipur: 6,464

ST closing ranks extended even further at several universities.

This tells you something important: AIR 4000 may be insufficient for a General category NLU seat but potentially useful for a reserved-category candidate.

You should therefore always look at three numbers:

  1. Your All India Rank
  2. Your category rank
  3. The previous closing rank for your specific category and preferred NLU

Looking only at AIR can sometimes give you an unnecessarily negative picture.

Does Domicile Matter If Your CLAT Rank Is 4000?

Yes. Domicile reservation can make a major difference in CLAT admissions.

Several NLUs have state-based reservation policies. This means candidates belonging to the state in which an NLU is situated may have access to seats reserved according to that university’s admission rules.

Suppose your AIR is around 4000. You may not qualify for the university through the regular General All India category, but you could potentially have a better chance if an applicable domicile category has a higher closing rank.

You should therefore never make your college list based only on the General category cut-off.

Before deciding that an NLU is impossible, check:

  • Whether the NLU provides domicile reservation
  • Whether you satisfy its domicile requirements
  • Your relevant category rank
  • Previous counselling closing ranks
  • Seat matrix for your programme
  • Whether separate reservations apply

The Consortium of NLUs itself states that candidates are invited for counselling according to the rank list and the admission matrix provided by each participating NLU.

Can Cut-Offs Reach 4000 in Later CLAT Counselling Rounds?

Cut-offs can move during subsequent counselling rounds, but you should be realistic about how much movement is possible.

A seat may become available when a student who was allotted an NLU chooses another institution, withdraws from counselling or moves to a higher-preference NLU. This creates movement in later merit lists.

However, if a university’s General category cut-off is around 1,000 or 1,500, it would be unrealistic to assume that it will automatically move to 4,000.

You can certainly remain alert during counselling, but do not build your entire admission strategy around an unlikely cut-off movement.

A better approach is to keep multiple options open while participating in every counselling opportunity for which you are eligible.

Can You Get an NLU Through Vacancy Rounds at 4000 Rank?

Possibly, but there is no guarantee.

After the central CLAT counselling process, individual NLUs may sometimes announce vacant seats. Vacancies can arise when admitted students withdraw or move to another university.

These opportunities can be useful because vacancy cut-offs may be different from regular counselling cut-offs.

If your rank is around 4000, you should regularly check:

  • Official NLU admission pages
  • Vacancy notifications
  • Eligibility conditions
  • Application deadlines
  • Category-specific vacancies
  • Required documents and fees

Do not assume that registering for CLAT counselling automatically registers you for every university’s vacancy process. Some NLUs may require a separate application.

Vacancy rounds should be treated as an additional opportunity, not your only admission plan.

Which Law Colleges Can You Consider With 4000 Rank in CLAT?

One common mistake students make after receiving a rank lower than expected is believing that NLU admission is the only path to a successful legal career.

It is not.

If your CLAT rank does not secure your preferred NLU, you can explore other reputable law universities and entrance examinations.

Depending on the admission year, you can look at colleges accepting their own entrance examination, universities accepting other law entrance scores and institutions admitting students through separate procedures.

Your final college decision should consider factors such as:

  • Quality of faculty
  • Internship opportunities
  • Moot court culture
  • Alumni network
  • Placement record
  • Location
  • Fees
  • Scholarships
  • Student societies
  • Exposure to litigation and corporate law
  • Academic environment

A famous university name can help, but your internships, research, mooting, networking and practical skills will also matter greatly over five years of law school.

Should You Take a Drop If Your CLAT Rank Is 4000?

Do not decide to take a drop immediately after seeing your rank.

A drop year makes sense only when you have carefully compared your available colleges with your realistic chances of significantly improving your CLAT performance.

Ask yourself:

  • Did you prepare seriously for CLAT this year?
  • Were there major gaps in your preparation?
  • Can you realistically improve your mock scores?
  • Are you comfortable spending another year preparing?
  • Do you have a good college option available right now?
  • Is an NLU important enough to you to justify another attempt?

If you scored AIR 4000 despite limited preparation, there may be considerable room for improvement. If you already prepared intensively for a year, the decision requires more careful thought.

Do not take a drop merely because someone tells you that only NLUs are worth attending.

What Should You Do After Getting Around 4000 Rank in CLAT?

Your next steps matter more than repeatedly checking whether 4000 is a “good” or “bad” rank.

Check your category rank

If reservation applies to you, your category rank may provide a much clearer picture than your AIR.

Study previous cut-offs carefully

Compare your rank with recent closing ranks for each university and category. Do not rely only on random predictions shared on social media.

Participate in counselling if eligible

If you receive a counselling invitation, complete the required steps within the deadlines. The Consortium’s counselling instructions require eligible candidates to follow the prescribed registration and admission process.

Keep alternative colleges ready

Prepare a backup list at the same time. Waiting until all NLU possibilities disappear can leave you with fewer good alternatives.

Follow vacancy announcements

Continue checking university admission pages even after regular counselling rounds are completed.

Compare colleges properly

Do not select a college merely because it carries the NLU tag. Compare fees, placements, faculty, location, internships and student opportunities before making your final choice.

Is 4000 Rank in CLAT Bad for Your Law Career?

Absolutely not.

Your CLAT rank decides where you may study law, not how successful you can eventually become as a lawyer.

Students sometimes treat CLAT as if it is the final examination of their legal career. In reality, it is only an entrance examination that determines admission opportunities at a particular stage.

Once law school starts, your career will increasingly depend on what you do during those five years. Internships, legal research, drafting skills, mooting, publications, networking, communication skills and practical exposure can all influence your career.

A student entering a top NLU still has to work consistently. Similarly, a student studying at a non-NLU can build a strong legal career through the right opportunities and skills.

So, Is 4000 a Good Rank in CLAT?

AIR 4000 in CLAT is generally not considered a strong rank for a General category student hoping to secure an NLU through regular counselling. Recent General category cut-offs at most NLUs have closed considerably before this rank.

But that is only one part of the answer.

If you have an applicable SC, ST, OBC, EWS, domicile or other reservation, AIR 4000 can still provide meaningful NLU possibilities depending on the university and seat matrix. Later rounds and vacancies may also create additional opportunities.

Most importantly, do not judge your future legal career based on one entrance rank. Check your category-specific chances, participate properly in counselling, keep strong backup colleges and choose the best law school available to you.

CLAT is an important exam, but AIR 4000 is not the end of your journey towards becoming a lawyer.
