The Global Slavery Index 2023, released by the Walk Free Foundation, highlights the alarming increase in modern slavery, with an estimated 50 million individuals living in exploitative conditions. This represents a shocking 25% increase over the past five years. Modern slavery encompasses various forms of exploitation, such as forced labour, forced marriage, human trafficking, and more. It affects people of all ages, genders, and nationalities globally.
The report ranks 160 countries based on modern slavery prevalence, vulnerability, and government response. North Korea, Eritrea, Mauritania, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey are among the countries with the highest prevalence, while Norway, Switzerland, and Germany have the lowest. Somalia, Sudan, and Afghanistan top the vulnerability ranking, while Norway, Finland, and Switzerland have the lowest vulnerability.
India is among the countries with the highest number of individuals living in modern slavery, estimated at 8 million in 2021. The country ranks 129th in terms of government response to modern slavery. India has implemented legislative policies, such as the Bonded Labour Abolition Act of 1976, and ratified relevant international conventions. However, challenges persist, including lack of data and awareness, weak enforcement of laws, poverty, and social norms perpetuating exploitation.
The Global Slavery Index 2023 urges G20 countries to take immediate action to combat modern slavery, particularly in their trade activities and global supply chains. The report provides recommendations for governments, businesses, civil society, and individuals to address modern slavery and protect its victims. Collaboration and data collection are essential in understanding and combating this global challenge.
