The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) recently announced the NIRF Ranking 2023, which showcases the excellence and accomplishments of educational institutions in India. The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras secured the top position in the overall ranking for the fifth consecutive year, while the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru was recognised as the best university.

Ranking Categories

The ranking exercise for 2023 follows the practice of providing an overall rank along with separate ranks for universities, research institutions, degree colleges, and discipline-specific ranks in engineering, management, pharmacy, law, medical, dental, and architecture & planning.

Notable Additions in the 2023 Edition of India Rankings

1. Introduction of a new subject: Agriculture & Allied Sectors.

2. Expansion of the scope of “Architecture” to “Architecture and Planning” to include institutions offering courses in Urban and Town Planning.

3. Integration of the “Innovation” ranking previously conducted by the Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements (ARIIA) into the India Rankings, reducing the burden on institutions to provide similar data to multiple agencies.

Participants

The number of Higher Educational Institutes participating in the ranking exercise has increased from 3,565 in 2016 to 8,686 in 2023. Additionally, the number of categories and subject domains has expanded from 4 in 2016 to 13 in 2023.

Top Rankings in Various Categories

Leading Engineering Institutions: IIT-Madras maintained its top position for the eighth consecutive year, with IIT-Delhi and IIT-Bombay securing the second and third positions, respectively.

Top Management Institutes: Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad claimed the top position as the leading management institute in India, followed by IIM Bangalore and IIM Kozhikode.

Top Law Institutes: The National Law School of India University, Bengaluru emerged as the top law institute in the country, with National Law University, Delhi securing the second position, and NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad ranking third.

Top Pharmacy Institutes: The National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research, Hyderabad was recognised as the leading pharmacy institute in India, closely followed by Jamia Hamdard and BITS Pilani.

Top Colleges: Delhi University (DU) demonstrated its prominence, with five of its colleges securing positions in the top 10 colleges in India. Miranda House retained its top position, while Hindu College secured the second spot.

NIRF Ranking Overview

The NIRF is a methodology approved by the Ministry of Education to rank institutions across India based on various parameters. It was launched on 29th September 2015, marking the government’s first-ever effort to rank Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in the country.

Parameters for NIRF Ranking

The weightage for each parameter varies based on the institution’s category. The parameters include teaching, learning & resources, research and professional practice, graduation outcomes, outreach and inclusivity, and perception.

The weightage for each parameter varies depending on the category of the institution. The parameters include:

1. Teaching, Learning & Resources (TLR): This parameter includes student strength including doctoral students, the faculty-student ratio with emphasis on permanent faculty, combined metric for faculty with Ph.D. (or equivalent) and experience, and financial resources and their utilization.

2. Research and Professional Practice (RP): This parameter includes a combined metric for publications and research productivity, the combined metric for quality of publications, IPR and patents: published and granted (IPR), and the footprint of projects and professional practice and executive development programs.

3. Graduation Outcomes (GO): This parameter includes metrics for university examinations, metric for number of Ph.D. students graduated, and outcome-based parameters.

4. Outreach and Inclusivity (OI): This parameter includes a percentage of students from other states/countries, women diversity, economically and socially challenged students, facilities for physically challenged students, and perception ranking.

5. Perception (PR): This parameter includes peer perception: academics, peer perception: employers & research investors, public perception, and competitiveness.
