In a significant step towards environmental protection, the Government of Karnataka has officially declared the Hesaraghatta Grassland as a Conservation Reserve under Section 36A of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. This designation aims to preserve one of the last remaining grassland ecosystems in the Bengaluru region.
A Conservation Reserve is a legally recognised protected area created under the Wildlife Protection Act to safeguard landscapes, seascapes, and ecosystems critical for biodiversity. These reserves often act as buffer zones or wildlife corridors, linking more strictly protected zones such as national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, and reserved forests.
The State Government will establish a Conservation Reserve Management Committee to provide advisory support to the Chief Wildlife Warden for the sustainable management and protection of the Hesaraghatta Reserve.
The grassland is situated near the Hesaraghatta Lake, on the outskirts of Bengaluru, and represents the last significant open grassland habitat of its kind in the region. Grasslands are usually dominated by grass species and are adapted to warm, dry climates.
