11th National Meeting Empowers Task Force for Clean Ganga Mission

In a significant development, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, the Union Minister for Jal Shakti, chaired the 11th ETF meeting of the National Mission for Clean Ganga  in New Delhi.

The state of Uttar Pradesh shared that industries are already mandated to treat their effluents and reuse up to 80% of the treated water, thereby significantly reducing their reliance on freshwater.

The Union Minister further directed officials from the NMCG and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs  to collaboratively devise a comprehensive strategy for cleaning approximately 2,000 identified drains in both urban and rural areas.

Between April 2022 and March 2023, a total of 1,157 monthly meetings were conducted and their minutes were uploaded, with Uttar Pradesh leading the way by hosting 741 meetings, including a maximum of 112 meetings in January 2023.

Features of the PRAYAG Platform

The PRAYAG Platform incorporates several innovative features designed to streamline efforts in restoring the Ganga River:

1. Comprehensive Data Analysis

The platform provides real-time data analysis and monitoring of river water quality through online dashboards. Stakeholders can access information from various sources and gain valuable insights into the health of the river.

2. Efficient Communication

Effective communication plays a crucial role in successful river restoration initiatives. The PRAYAG Platform offers a dedicated communication channel, enabling stakeholders to share information, updates, and best practices.

3. Collaboration and Networking

The PRAYAG Platform serves as a hub for collaboration, networking, and knowledge exchange. It brings together individuals, organisations, and communities working towards the preservation of the Ganga River.

4. Decision Support Tools

The platform provides decision support tools that aid in planning and implementation of river conservation projects. These tools leverage advanced technologies such as geospatial mapping, predictive modelling, and data visualisation to facilitate evidence-based decision-making.

Empowering Change through Collaboration

The 11th meeting of the Empowered Task Force  of the National Mission for Clean Ganga showcased the government’s commitment to addressing the challenges faced by the Ganga River.

During the meeting, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, the Union Minister for Jal Shakti, unveiled the PRAYAG Monitoring Centre—a state-of-the-art facility located at the NMCG office in New Delhi.

Monitoring Water Quality in Real Time

The PRAYAG Monitoring Centre’s online dashboards, such as the Ganga Tarang Portal, Jajmau Plant using Online Drone Data, PMT Tool Dashboard, and Ganga Districts Performance Monitoring System, enable real-time monitoring of river water quality.

Holistic Strategies for Freshwater Conservation

Shri Shekhawat stressed the importance of freshwater conservation and instructed officials to analyse freshwater consumption by different industries along the course of the River Ganga.

Comprehensive Approach to Cleanliness

The Union Minister instructed representatives from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and the NMCG to work together on a comprehensive plan for clearing out the roughly 2,000 identified drains in both urban and rural regions.

Ministry of Jal Shakti’s Commitment

The establishment of the Ministry of Jal Shakti in May 2019 demonstrated India’s commitment to addressing water-related challenges comprehensively.

The ministry’s consolidation of the Ministry of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation, and the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation reflects the nation’s dedication to effectively managing water resources.

Summary

The PRAYAG Platform stands as a powerful digital tool, uniting stakeholders in their commitment to restore and preserve the purity of the holy Ganga River.

By harnessing advanced technologies, comprehensive data analysis, and effective communication, the platform enhances decision-making, streamlines efforts, and fosters collaboration.
