What is Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana?

The Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana is a flagship welfare scheme of the Maharashtra government launched in June 2024 to provide eligible women with ₹1,500 per month through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). The scheme aims to improve women’s financial independence, nutrition, and decision-making within households. Eligible beneficiaries are generally women aged 21–65 years from families meeting the prescribed income and other eligibility criteria.

• As a result, the number of beneficiaries reduced from around 2.43 crore at its peak to about 1.5 crore women.
• The verification exercise has also become a political issue, with the government maintaining that it was necessary to ensure only genuine beneficiaries receive the benefits, while opposition parties have questioned the timing and scale of the removals.
