Rashtriya Ekta Diwas Marks Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s 151st Birth Anniversary

India observed Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, or National Unity Day, on 31 October 2026 to mark the 151st birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The day is observed every year to honour Patel’s role in strengthening the unity and territorial integration of independent India.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, often called the “Iron Man of India”, played a central role in integrating more than 500 princely states into the Indian Union after Independence. As India’s first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister, he worked closely with V.P. Menon to secure the accession of princely states and help build a unified political structure. His contribution to national integration remains the main reason 31 October is commemorated as National Unity Day.

In 2026, several official programmes were organised across the country. Union Home Minister Amit Shah flagged off the Run for Unity in New Delhi and administered the Unity Pledge. The pledge focuses on preserving the unity, integrity and security of the nation.

The President of India, Droupadi Murmu, also paid floral tributes to Sardar Patel at Rashtrapati Bhavan and Sardar Patel Chowk in New Delhi.

Major celebrations were also organised at Ekta Nagar in Gujarat, near the Statue of Unity. The 2026 programme included the Ekta Parade and cultural performances, with special emphasis on national unity and the role of security forces.
