Can Arts Students Apply for CLAT?

Yes, arts students can apply for CLAT. The Common Law Admission Test is open to students from all educational streams, including arts, science and commerce. The eligibility criteria for CLAT are based on the candidate’s educational qualifications and not on their stream.

To be eligible for CLAT, you must have completed your 12th standard or an equivalent examination with a minimum of 45% marks if you belong to the general or OBC category. For SC/ST candidates, the required percentage is 40%. There is no restriction based on the subjects you studied in 12th grade, so whether you come from arts, commerce or science, you can appear for the exam.

Arts students often have an advantage in some sections of CLAT, especially in subjects like English, Current Affairs and Legal Reasoning, as these areas require strong reading, writing and comprehension skills. These are skills that many arts students develop throughout their schooling.

Here’s a simple plan for arts students preparing for CLAT:

  1. Focus on Legal Reasoning and Current Affairs: Regularly read newspapers, especially on legal and current events. This will help you in the Current Affairs and Legal Reasoning sections.
  2. Practice Logical Reasoning and Quantitative Techniques: These areas require practice. Use mock tests and past papers to improve your problem-solving speed.
  3. Work on Time Management: CLAT is a timed exam, so practising with mock tests will help you complete all sections within the time limit.

In short, your background in arts will not stop you from cracking CLAT. With the right preparation and a clear understanding of the exam format, you can definitely succeed.
