Who is Abhijeet Dipke and Why is the ‘Cockroach Janta Party’ Trending?

A satirical online movement called the “Cockroach Janta Party” (CJP) has rapidly become one of the biggest digital talking points in India. Started by Abhijeet Dipke on May 16, the page gained massive traction after controversy surrounding remarks made by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant during a court hearing. Within days, the satirical outfit reportedly crossed 19 million followers on Instagram, making it one of the most-followed political satire pages in the country.

The movement combines memes, political commentary, internet humour and youth-centric issues such as unemployment, examination paper leaks, education pressure and online culture. Through sharp graphics, exaggerated manifestos and sarcastic campaign-style posts, the page has attracted attention from students, activists, creators and politicians alike.

Who is Abhijeet Dipke?

According to reports, Abhijeet Dipke is around 30 years old and studied journalism in Pune for his undergraduate degree. He is reportedly pursuing a master’s degree in public relations at Boston University.

Reports also suggest that Dipke was associated with the Aam Aadmi Party between 2020 and 2023 and volunteered with the party’s social media team. During the 2020 Delhi Assembly elections, he reportedly worked on meme-based digital campaigning, an approach that later became a key element of the Cockroach Janta Party’s online identity.

What is the Cockroach Janta Party?

The Cockroach Janta Party describes itself as a satirical “political party for the people the system forgot to count.” Its website presents the platform as the “voice of the lazy and unemployed” and uses exaggerated humour to comment on social and political issues.

The page’s “eligibility criteria” jokingly states that members should be “unemployed, lazy, and chronically online” with the “ability to rant professionally.” Despite the humour-driven approach, many of its posts focus on concerns frequently discussed by young Indians, including jobs, competitive exams, economic stress and internet culture.

Much of the page’s popularity comes from its meme-driven political satire, short-form videos and relatable commentary targeting Gen Z and young social media users.

How Did the Controversy Begin?

The online movement emerged shortly after remarks made by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant during a hearing on May 15.

While hearing a plea related to senior designation for lawyers, the Chief Justice referred to certain unemployed youngsters as “cockroaches” while criticising individuals allegedly entering professions through questionable means. The remarks quickly went viral on social media, triggering backlash and widespread debate.

Soon after, the Cockroach Janta Party adopted the “cockroach” label as a satirical identity and turned it into an internet movement.

However, the Chief Justice later clarified that his remarks were misquoted and were specifically directed at individuals entering the legal profession through “fake and bogus degrees,” not unemployed youth in general.

Why Has the Page Become So Popular?

The rise of the Cockroach Janta Party reflects how political satire and meme culture are increasingly shaping online discourse in India. Instead of functioning like a traditional political organisation, the platform operates more like a digital protest movement built around humour and viral engagement.

Its rapid growth also highlights how younger audiences often connect more with informal, meme-based commentary than conventional political messaging. By mixing sarcasm with genuine public concerns, the page has managed to create a large online following within a very short period.

The page’s growth across Instagram and X has also sparked conversations about digital activism, free speech, satire and the influence of social media movements in shaping public debate.
