Who Is Sonam Wangchuk?

Sonam Wangchuk is one of India’s most respected innovators, known for transforming education in Ladakh and developing sustainable solutions to tackle climate challenges in the Himalayan region. While many people recognise him as the inspiration behind the character “Phunsukh Wangdu” from 3 Idiots, Wangchuk’s work extends far beyond that.

In recent weeks, he has once again come into the national spotlight, this time because of an indefinite hunger strike demanding accountability over alleged examination irregularities and education reforms.

Why Is Sonam Wangchuk in the News?

Sonam Wangchuk is currently in the news because of his indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.

He began the fast on 28 June 2026 in support of a nationwide movement demanding accountability over alleged irregularities in competitive examinations, including the NEET paper leak controversy.

The protest also seeks educational reforms and calls for greater accountability from authorities responsible for conducting public examinations.

Association With the Cockroach Janta Party Movement

Wangchuk has joined the protest movement led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), a youth-led campaign that emerged following public outrage over alleged examination irregularities, including the NEET paper leak controversy, and has called for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. He has also raised concerns relating to unemployment and education.

The movement has gained significant attention on social media and has organised peaceful demonstrations demanding reforms in the education system and greater transparency in recruitment and examination processes.

Health Concerns During the Hunger Strike

As the hunger strike has continued, Wangchuk’s health has become a matter of national concern.

Doctors monitoring his condition have reported that he has lost more than 9 kilograms, warning that prolonged fasting may increase the risk of serious medical complications, including organ damage.

Despite repeated appeals, Wangchuk has continued his fast, stating that he remains committed to his cause.

Delhi High Court’s Intervention

The worsening health condition prompted the filing of a Public Interest Litigation before the Delhi High Court.

Taking note of the situation, the Court observed that the life of every citizen is precious and directed authorities to conduct daily medical examinations of Wangchuk. The Court also instructed that appropriate medical intervention should be provided whenever necessary to safeguard his health while the matter remains under consideration.

Awards and Recognition

Wangchuk’s contributions have earned him several prestigious honours.

Some of his major recognitions include:

  • Ramon Magsaysay Award (2018)
  • Global Award for Sustainable Architecture (2017)
  • Rolex Awards for Enterprise
  • Fred M. Packard Award
  • Ashoka Fellowship for Social Entrepreneurship

His work has been recognised internationally for combining innovation with sustainable development and education reform.

Previous Public Movements

Before the current protest, Wangchuk had led several campaigns highlighting issues affecting Ladakh.

He has advocated for:

  • Constitutional safeguards for Ladakh.
  • Environmental protection in the Himalayan region.
  • Greater local autonomy.
  • Sustainable development policies.

In 2024, he undertook a climate fast to demand constitutional protection for Ladakh. In 2025, he was detained under the National Security Act (NSA) following protests in Ladakh and was released in March 2026 after the detention order was revoked.
